FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: Where can I get the application?
A: If you go to a participating New Orleans school, your school’s college or career counselor will be able to give you an application. We work through counselors at participating high schools to be sure Apprentices receive internship course credit and to help communicate information and expectations to applicants and Apprentices. While you’re at it, you might also want to ask him or her to write your letter of recommendation!
Q: Can you help with transportation?
A: Yes! We run a bus to and from our partner schools in order to make sure transportation challenges don’t get in the way of our time together. Buses run from partner schools to program sites. Apprentices can either meet the bus at school or coordinate their own transportation to the site.
Q: Do I need to already have experience working in construction?
A: No! You definitely do not need any prior skills or experience – but a little curiosity certainly helps. You’ll learn everything you need on the job site under the supervision of skilled staff and alongside your peers.
Q: What if I don’t want to work in construction when I grow up?
A: That’s fine! Construction is the method we use to better prepare high schoolers for college AND career. There’s a lot of math, engineering, and physics, setting a great foundation for any number of STEM jobs. Even more, by working on a diverse team throughout the build process, you’ll gain leadership skills and be better prepared for whatever your long-term career goals are.
Q: Can girls be Apprentices, too?
A: Of course they can.
Q: Can I do more than one Apprenticeship?
A: Definitely! You can complete as many Apprenticeships as you can before you graduate high school. Coming back for another cycle offers opportunities to take on new leadership roles and build on the skills you’ve already gained. Plus, you’ll be able to continue earning credits toward graduation at the same time, thanks to the Jump Start Program.
